SL3      BR-WR / GWR 17 FOOT ROOF BOARDS £5.99 / £6.99

The GWR first used 17 foot long roof boards with rounded off corners. Their usage carried over to some trains on the BR-WR. They were fitted to coaches just above the gutter, up on the roof itself. Hornby inherited the Dapol Centenary coach tooling which includes model roof board strips of this type.

We offer custom made packs of 30 such roof boards, made using either glossy film or matte plastic waterproof label materials. To 4mm (OO) scale, following generic styling practices for the wording and colouration that you specify in the form below. Choose the lettering typeface, colour and background board colour, then enter the wording that you would like.

For a few special trains elaborate lettering styles were used - with finely edged characters and sometimes drop shading - but for most roof boards, lettering varied on common font faces (for safe web viewing we're stuck with browser fonts here). Make your selection from the following styles:

PLAIN GIL SANS - was the most common BR-WR font
GIL SANS ITALIC - familiar for the BR-WR
EARLY GOTHIC - a GWR speciality
SERIF ITALIC GOTHIC - another BR-WR style

The colour of the lettering varied (examples here use web approximations). Make your letter colour selection:

  XXX - cream (early GWR & BR-WR)
XXX - yellow (for R223/233/4312/4313 Pullmans)
XXX - golden yellow (latest Pullmans)
  XXX - chocolate (BR-WR & GWR)
  XXX - black (BR-WR)

The board background colour also varied (again approximate impressions). Make your board colour selection:

     - white (GWR & BR-WR)
     - pale cream / aged white (GWR & BR-WR)
     - cream (BR-WR)
     - chocolate (BR-WR)
     - Pullman umber
     - carmine / maroon (typical for BR) - not for waterproof, cream lettering required
     - weathered maroon (BR) - only on Weather Proof plastic with cream lettering

The above colours are not an exclusive list - there were other rare variations. Most typically the board colour was matched to a colour on the coach body, and we've matched the actual colours that we print as closely as possible to Hornby and Bachmann model paint colours. Certain colour combinations are not permitted as they are unreal or would result in unreadable text.

Please enter the exact lettering that you would like on your roof boards in the box below. Be sure to use UPPER or lower-case letters as you want them - almost always real text was in UPPER-CASE. Include hyphens ( - ) and apostrophes ( ' ) as and where you want them to appear. Note that for destinations with bracketed station names, the font within the brackets will be made smaller as per real practice - e.g. "LONDON (PADDINGTON)".

When you are happy with the selections that you have made above, click on an "Add To Cart" button below to purchase the desired format of labels. If you would like to order more than one set of labels to the same specification, you can either "Add To Cart" again or alter the quantity required in the PayPal shopping cart window which opens. To order labels with a different specification, simply alter your selections above and then "Add To Cart" again. Note that only so many characters fit the board width in a prototypical font size, if you reach the limit, you may need to order another pack to continue the text on further boards.
